Uninsurable Futures? – Leveraging climate mitigation and nature to increase resilience

Wednesday 21 January 2026 13:30-15:30 CET

ENERGY ROOM

How can regulators, insurers and governments stop the insurance protection gap from becoming a systemic risk to economies and public finances?

Based on WWF policy brief and new flagship report (to be published on Jan 15th), this workshop examines how physical climate and nature risks are eroding insurability in advanced economies. Protection gaps are widening for households and businesses in vulnerable locations, with knock-on effects for supply chains, financial stability and public budgets, as governments increasingly act as insurers of last resort.

An advisory group of insurers, brokers, academics, international organisations and NGOs supports the initiative. At Davos, the focus is on solutions: how to build a holistic understanding of risk (including second-order impacts); integrate mitigation and nature-based solutions into strategies; and align incentives, regulation and supervision to shrink the gap rather than manage its consequences.
